I have a 500 GIG version of this portable hard drive which is several years old, & I am very pleased with it but all of us in the family was sharing the same drive so I figured that it was about time to get each our own. I was going to go for 2 more 500 GIG ones but the price of the 1TB was just too good to pass up.

Since we are not using the Passport for automatic back-up we didn’t install the software (well we did on one then removed it as it really didn’t fit our needs)and although our USB ports are still 1.0 and though that there may be an issue but there wasn’t and they work fine.

The order came much quicker than I had expected and we are pleased with the transaction, shipping and most of all our new portable hard drives.

It’s my first external hard drive to use. I wanted a portable hard drive to store my personal data on and I have a windows 7 virtual machine in it and I’m able to plug this hard drive to any computer that has a virtual machine software and I have my PC in my pocket wherever I go (home, work, … etc).

Portability was a main factor for me, and this hard drive is very portable it can actually fit in your shirt’s pocket, but I don’t do that actually, I bought a case for it to protect it and it has a space for the USB cable too, so I do recommend getting one if you gonna have it with you on the go often. The only shortcoming I see which is not really vital is that the USB cable is a bit too short, but it’s not that big deal anyway. Other than that tha drive is very stable I move it a lot while using it and having the VM running and nothing ever happened.

Basically I chose WD HDD ’cause of its great quality and its pretty competitive price. Indeed, I bought a 210 GB external HD three year ago, and after rough use, it’s still working perfectly, i.e my experience with WD has been excellent. This is a really important feature to me.

I had a look at the software included, It’s pretty simple to use and easy to manage your files; but being honest, I’ll format it ’cause I’m used to managing my files with an open-source sync tool. This is not a key to me.

Physically, the size and weight are acceptable, just don’t forget that is 1TB !!! , maybe the only problem is the surface, you know it gets fingerprints and can scratch easily. It would be a good idea to get a case

Finally, keep in mind that the cable included isn’t the typical USB-miniUSB(see photos), so don’t loose it or you’ll need to get it from WD directly and I could easily guess it wont be cheap.

The drive is pretty much what you expect, a portable 1TB USB 3.0 drive. Fast speeds when hooked up through USB 3.0 and decent speeds on USB 2.0. If your laptop doesn’t have USB 3.0, you can get an ExpressCard USB 3.0 adapter.

Western digital has included some software on the drive which I did not try out. They no longer have a separate partition which appears as a CD drive, which was extremely annoying on their older drives.

The cable is USB 3.0. It is short, but it does the trick. The connector on the drive is the USB 3.0 micro B connector, which consists of a USB 2.0 micro B connector plus an extra, smaller port right next to it for the USB 3.0 wires. You can plug a normal USB 2.0 micro B cables you may already have if you’re connecting it to a USB 2.0 port.

The biggest downside to the drive is the glossy finish. I have only had the drive 5 days and the edges are already scuffed. It is also a big fingerprint magnet. A matte finish would have looked fine and avoided these problems.

This Western Digital works awesome. I can’t believe how small it is! I choose not to use to software, and the directions do not walk you through how to use it anyways, which is kind of frustrating. But I back things up when I feel like it, so that is not the issue. For excessive portable storage nothing beats it. Runs quiet, tons of space, fast transmission, can work just like a flash drive if you want it to. Great for clearing up room on your hard drive and still having it with you at all times.

It works great. I use it like a flashdrive. The included software is not necessary to use it on other computers, though the encryption software is kinda handy. I never bothered with the backup software because Windows’ software is just fine. Beware though: at least with the black color, many scratches begin to become visible after a couple weeks. It’s just the color and the texture of it. So it may not look pretty, but does a nice job of storing. Also, this hard drive holds about 931 Gb, NOT 1 full Tb. I was very disappointed that the scale was that off, but I guess it works

How Many External Hard Drive Do You Have At The Same Time

How many external hard drive do you have at the same time? I just purchased this external hard drive to replace my 250 GB external hard drive. I also bought a 4-port USB hub. Will I be able to have both external hard drives on at the same time? Would my computer consider one of them to be an F drive (for example) and the other a G drive? If I can, in fact, have both external hard drives turned on at the same time, would I be able to transfer files directly from the old hard drive to the new one, or would I have to use my computer’s internal drive as an intermediary?

You can have as many as your computer will map. It will assign a drive letter to it automatically. I have 3 or 4 on each computer myself.

I have five hard drives, no problem. Whenever I turn one on, the computer recognizes it as “F” “G” “H” or whatever. I leave them off except when I’m doing a backup or getting data off a drive (usually photo files–I’m a photographer).

I have the question. And also looks like Staples will be having Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB External Hard Drive at the same price on their Cyber Monday deals (as posted on official Staples Facebook), can we please get a price lowering on this for $69.00?

Target still has a lot of the 69 deal I suggest going and getting it at the store just bought my and they still have a lot at the store and it is 1205pm western california time amazing.

No crap… you think those people actually counted the number of units? I WAS just at target however and did see 2 1TB drives for 69.99. However there system registers them as costing $94.99. Deal is over

I think what might have happened is that some smaller Target stores sold out very quickly but some larger ones had disproportionately more stock, so they didn’t. I was at a mall Target yesterday at around 8:30PM and there was still a huge pile of the 2TB drives in the middle of the floor, a mostly full display on one of the end shelves, and probably a dozen or two discarded around the Electronics department. To the first person to mention there being stock remaining, thank you so much for convincing me to give it a shot!

At the Target I visited, there were two kinds of the 1TB version: a portable one and a non-portable one. I think only the portable one was supposed to be on sale as well, but I didn’t see either of them with a sale sign so I can’t be sure. On the other hand, that particular Target was really bad with signage; one of the video games that I noted in the Black Friday circular did not have a sale sign on the display, but turned out to have the correct Black Friday price when I brought a copy to the register.

I went online at 12:00 AM and was there for 5 mins but the Cyber monday page was not activated. I highly doubt amazon will price match it to 69 like Staples and Target. If they did imagine how fast they would sell out (just like Staples). As far as the Staples situation, it was wrong for them to advertise the sale erroneously; however, it was a product in high demand and the deal was unbelievably good. I just ordered mines from B&H photo dot com; they have the same hard drive for 85 dollars. cheaper than amazon and only 15 dollars more if you’re willing to dish out.
