My External Hard Drives Wouldn’t Work Out Of The Box

I’ve had loads of external hard drives for backups from 5 MB up (yes – MB, not GB). This is the first one that wouldn’t work out of the box. It would start the backup, after about 5 minutes the computer would loose the drive, the backup would fail, then it would reappear.

I sent this 1T Western Digital drive back and went with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100 (Black), which is fine and even supports other interfaces. But that’s another review…

I’m running Windows 7 on a Dell E6400 and have never had a problem with a drive or the USB port.

I suspect that it has a problem with the power on the USB port power. Don’t let them tell you “all externally powered drives over 500 MB have this problem”. I have 640s, 750s, and even the 1TB Seagate and have no problem.

On the plus side, it’s slightly smaller and lighter than the Seagate (but more so than a 640 GB drive). However, what good is carrying a small drive that doesn’t work? You might as well carry a rabbit’s foot and hope for the best.

Big drive need enough power to run properly……if your computer have problem of power then this problem starts……although you can use flash drive very easily that not enough to power to this powerful machine……….

External hard drive has an on/off switch on the drive, hopefully in front?Also, is the electric plug a simple plug, or is it one of those big bricks that takes up 2 spots on the surge strip? From my experience, not only an on/off switch but also a fan. Heat is a killer, I don’t care what they (mfgs) say.

Bummer, that’s a deal-killer for me, I have 6 different external drives and my experience is that a drive with an on/off switch is what I need. Thanks for the quick reply…

Their advertising says that it doesn’t have any auto bootup software built in. Is this true? I want to use my own 3-party backup software.

WD Elements 2 TB HDD does NOT have an on-off switch. Just connect the electricity plug and then the USB cable, and it’s ready to go. This HDD has a power adapter with the 2 flat USA type plugs right on that power adapter. So to plug in the electricity outlet on the wall or on a surge strip, the whole power adapter needs to be plugged in and does take 2 spots on the wall outlet or on a surge strip. From that power adapter, coming out is the electricity plug which goes directly into the HDD. So the power adapter and the electricity plug are in fact only one piece, all together.

I am using this WD Elements 2TB HDD now with no software whatsoever from WD. So if I remembered correctly (I have this HDD for quite some time by now), either the HDD did not originally have any software on it, or if the HDD originally had some softwares on it they should be easily deleted by just simply delete them in Windows Explorer. One thing is certain though, no software was automatically self-installed when I first connected the HDD to my computer.

I desperately need to back up years’ worth of photos and design files but i want to make sure that they are safe forever. i’ve been reading about the inevitability of hard drive failures, so what’s my best option? burn everything to like a hundred cd’s, save data to usb flash drives, or buy multiple hard drives and duplicate my backup that way?

Western Digital says the component design life of a Western Digital drive is 5 yrs. Does that mean after 5 yrs the hard drive is not going to work?
What’s the use of keeping 2 copies or more if they are going to die after 5 years, or am I misunderstanding what Western Digital is saying about their hard drive design life?

Have at least 2 copies of your files. Preferably 1 offsite in case of physical damage to your living quarters. I personally have an external drive that I use as the backup to my internal drive. Most important thing is to have redundancy regardless of what you use (CDs can scratch/go bad, USB sticks can have the NAND go bad etc etc.). If you have 2 copies, you’re good to go unless you have some disaster destroy your place. If offsite storage isn’t a possibility, a firebox is a decent alternative.

I’m looking for an external hard drive to back up that is reasonably priced and easily compatible with a Macbook ? Used the drive to back up several computers…including a windows xp and also latest mac…today I went to find a file on the drive with my mac air… it was a music file…found it with no problem burned a cd..but then I noticed that in finder I couldn’t see the WD…so I unplugged and replugged…now the mac is acting like it cannot see the drive at all….utility doesn’t se it either…any ideas how to proceed?

Well I figured it out for all those of you who need to format this for a MAC.
Open your Disk Utility and find the Drive WD External HDD… Click on it once and you will see options on the right.
Hit the button on top called PARTITION. Where it says VOLUME INFORMATION, change the name to something like ‘backup’ or whatever name you choose, and then where it says FORMAT, hit the drop down menu and choose MS-DOS FAT
Hit APPLY. Let it run thru it’s thing. Then eject the drive. Plug it back in and then drag and drop your files. It works perfectly

Check Western Digital website. About 4 years ago a WD that I had would unmount on occasion from my mac. The WD website detailed a procedure to unplug it / restart / plug it back in for macs to see it and it worked fine. I don’t know why that happened once in awhile. If it does come on again, make sure your data on it is backed up. I would be nervous that it’s a sign of possible failure – as all drives eventually do now.

can anyone tell me the biggest computer file that can be transferred to Western Digital WD Elements 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive? I have SINGLE files that are 5-10 GB long like ISO games, and i was wondering if there is a limit in this external hard drive per single file transfer, or i can just transfer big single sized files?

I’m talking about is for example an .iso file that has 10 gb of memory in one single file, just one icon, so i was wondering what was the limit, if any on this external harddrive when i transfer this file, because my girfriend got a 500gb wd and she couldnt transfer a 6 gb single file, so what;s the limit on 2000gb Western Digital HDD?

The biggest file size depends on the format of the hard drive. to my knowledge, ntfs does not have a file size limit. fat does.so, if you want to transfer large files, you may need to reformat the hard drive.

Unless the file itself is larger than all of the space on the drive (or larger than the partiton) the limitation on file size, and in some cases partition size, is caused by the file system for which the partition is formatted. The most recent choices in the PC/Windows environment are FAT32 and NTFS.

FAT32 has a limitation of 4GB on the size of any one file. I don’t know what the limit is for NTFS formatted partitons, but I’ve got one 10GB file on an NTFS partition.

As I understand it, this particular product comes formatted NTFS, and I assume it’s one big partition.

I want to use EHD for both Mac and Windows XP simultaneously, how could i do? I am planning in connecting this Western Digital EHD to the Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router. However we have both Macs and PCs at home and I am looking forward to perform a dual independent formatting of the EHD so I would like to partition the disk half for Mac and half for PC. Would that be possible?

I just did this two nights ago with this drive. Format it first on the Mac using disk utilities. Make sure to leave one partition empty (for the XP formatting). Then hook the drive up to the PC with Win Xp and go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management and you will see the drive with an empty partition that you can format for Windows. I use Mediafour MacDrive on my PC’s and all of my Mac disks can be read and written to on both PCs and Macs. Been doing this for years without any problems.
