WD HDD Perfect beating, writing, reading, formatting, and partitioning
Posted in External Hard Drive Reviews by Manyu Saturday, August 13th, 2011I had been using a portable Western Digital 500 gig drive since 09 and it took a lot of beating, writing, reading, formatting, and partitioning. I deiced to upgrade to a higher capacity drive since about 65% of my old drive was filled up. I looked at Seagate at first but after getting a suppose to be 1TB desktop drive from years back and only getting about 698 gigs, I stayed with Western Digital as the option. I love this drive. It’s build quality is great and I’m working with about 931 gigs a nice upgrade from my 500 gig. I also like that the LED has been shrunk, my last western digital portal lite up the room at night while attached to my computer.
And then there is the fact that its USB 3.0 compatible. I don’t have a USB 3 system so I cannot review on it’s 3.0 transfer speeds, but at least I know when I decide to get a system that has USB 3, this drive will be ready for fast data transfers. I needed to call their free tech support to get help to format the device for both types of computers. I needed some clarifications and ended up talking to three different people at the support number.
Every single person was extremely nice, clear, and patient. This is the first Western Digital product I’ve ever bought so this gives me great faith in the company. Good customer service is rare, especially when free, and they provide it. I didn’t even have to be put on hold to get help, and they kept track of my previous calls so I didn’t have to re-explain when I called back. My drive is all set-up. Excellent! LOVE IT WD!!!
This newer version is even better – processes fast, very lightweight, doesn’t heat up over long periods of use. Super portable, which is exactly what I needed, and I can slip it right inside my laptop cover if I want. The only downfall in my opinion is that the USB adapter on this hard drive is not a more widely used type.
This HD is great for people who want a functional drive but don’t mind cosmetic wear and tear. The drive will scratch easily but functions as normal. Mine has also taken quite a bit of abuse and functions great. The drive does have some compatibility issues. It does not work on older laptop computers because USB 3.0 takes more power to supply and most older laptops only support USB 1.0 and 2.0 drives. Other than compatibility issues and cosmetic problems, this is a great HD for people who would like a really fast transfer rate in a very small, very portable HD!
