In addition to design more glitz, fashion, but also with a USB 2.0 interface, and G series external hard disk provides data encryption software and SafetyKey SecretZone password protection, support for automatic data backup, lower power consumption.

SecretZone backup is very simple, convenient and very user-friendly design, you are free to design the folder what you need to back up, and even the backup time.

SecretZone software data can be stored in different locations, complete privacy is protected, this space need to start SafetyKey software program and have to open the secret lock.

Just start using SafetyKey You can set the administrator account password, later you need to start with the password which you first set. This is the first layer of protection.

You can change the password, or uninstall, under the administration of this user You can also create more space for independent encryption. When we forget the password, you can choose to unloading the space you created, but the external hard disk data inside will be all empty, which is to protect consumer information security is not compromised. So SafetyKey can protect the security of user data, and very convenient.

Samsung G2 external hard drive test platform

Test software: HD Tach, HD Tune, FastCopy

In the test of these two conventional external hard disk, the Samsung G2 Portable speed performance is very good, HD Tuch software testing read speed is 35.9MB / S. However, in the HD Tune test, the distinguish of read and write speed is between 32.1MB / S with 29.2MB / S, compared with the same type of product performance more prominent.

In the actual write speed tests, we tested two forms of Samsung G2 Portable, the first use of a single 4GB file to write. In a single volume tests, the Samsung G2 Portable actual write speed is 26.25MB / S, to copy 4GB file only need 155.38 seconds.

The second test we used a system folder capacity of about 5GB, there are many fragmented files. This Samsung G2 Portable also did well, with an average write speed of 19.68MB / S, 5GB or so fragmented file takes 258.98.

The most important feature of Samsung G2 Portable Hard Drive is environmental protection, energy conservation, it is the industry’s first product use of recycled materials, and packaging materials using the same materials which can be recycled, not to burden the earth.

Seagate GoFlex external hard drive, supporting the USB 2.0 interface, the colorare black, red, silver, blue (the color code representative of the last one) for consumers to choose.Seagate GoFlex external hard drive appearance is different from the previous generation products, its decorated with polished shell design, the overall sense of flow lines. In order to make it more lightweight, ABS plastic shell with a material to protect the internal hard drive.

Seagate GoFlex external hard drive, speed 5400PRM, the current capacities of 320GB, 500GB, size 111 × 83 × 14 mm and weighs 150 grams, supports AES 192-bit encryption in the Windows system, folder synchronization and automatic pc backup software.

Plate body can be separated with interface, we can replace to Seagate USB 3.0, eSATA and firewire 800 interfaces designed specifically for it.

A GoFlex products vast has three major components the hard drive, data cable and adapter, storage system device.

USB 3.0 interface is the storage industry’s latest technology, its maximum transmission bandwidth of up to 4.8Gbps, which is 625MB / s or so, the speed is ten times the USB 2.0 interface, and are backward compatible with USB 2.0 interface.

eSATA interface can theoretically reach 3Gbps transfer rate, but the actual application, subject to the internal hard disk transfer rate and the constraints of the motherboard, the actual data transmission may range between 1.5Gbps to 3Gbps, but still higher than IEEE 1394, USB2.0 transfer rate. now motherboards common with wSATA interface.

firewire 800 transfer speeds can theoretically reach up to 3200Mb / s, a large amount of data to meet the most demanding file transfer and video applications. But now there is little board support for firewire 800 interface products, primarily for users using of Apple computer.

With USB 3.0 interface, so we introduced a new motherboard with Gigabyte “GA-H55N-USB3″, it is the world’s first powered USB 3.0 interface specification Mini Mini-ITX motherboard.

Software Testing

HD Tune: The main function of hard disk transfer rate testing, health testing, temperature testing and disk surface scan. Hard disk firmware version, serial number, capacity, cache size and the current Ultra DMA mode.

CrystalDiskMark-v2.20: storage size of the test, the test can also read and write speed.

FastCopy: FastCopy on the Windows platform is the fastest file copy, delete the software.

USB2.0 write test: speed over 30MB / S.

Test Summary: under the USB 2.0 interface, the speed of Seagate GoFlex external hard drive compared to similar products, its among the best. HD Tuch software testing, its reading and writing speed respectively is 31.8MB / S, 18.3MB / S. However, in the HD Tune test reading and writing, respectively is 30.81MB / S with 18.9MB / S, the curve to read and write is very smooth, it’s good in similar products.

Test Summary: Seagate GoFlex HDD in USB 3.0 interface test, the test curve is not smooth, starting from the highest rate was in decline,it is a common phenomenont in he early introduction of USB 3.0. Finally, the average read and write speeds respectively up to 67MB / S, Burst has reached 79.5MB / S, such as reading and writing speed has similar with 2.5-inch hard drive with the SATA interface. in actual use, accounting for 8% CPU has little effect of the whole system.

In this comparison, it is clear that read and write performance of USB 3.0 interface of GoFlex external hard drive are two to three times higher than USB 2.0, read and write are in the 80MB / S or so, has been considered to the SATA interface hard disk performance. However, under the USB 2.0 interface also has a good academic performance, reading speed 23.7MB / S, write speed also reached 21.31MB / S.

Test Summary: 12875.9MB enough to play the actual transmission performance of USB 3.0, throughout the transmission process, a GoFlex Hard Drive USB 3.0 interface, the average speed of 53MB / S over, the entire 12GB game file transfer finished just 242.89 seconds, about 4 minutes. USB 2.0, however, under long time to copy than the end, spent a total of 625.33 seconds. Strong enough to see the advantages of USB 3.0, as long as you are willing, you can experience the efficiency of high-speed transmission.

Seagate GoFlex external hard drive also has multi-functional backup, synchronization software, multiple computers can perform data synchronization, and bare metal system restore.

If there is a serious crash or virus attack, Seagate GoFlex external hard drive can almost instantaneous restoration of files you have backed up, thus ensuring access the file at times of crisis.

In addition to choices a variety of cable, you can use GoFlex or GoFlex Pro ultra-portable hard drive with a GoFlex TV HD Media Player or GoFlex Net media sharing network equipment to enhance the sensory experience of hard disk storage. Meanwhile GoFlex can interoperate in windows and Mac operating systems.

Seagate External Hard Drive GoFlex HDD Test And Reviews: As long as you have Seagate GoFlex external hard drive, then you have many possibilities, allowing it to adapt to USB 2.0, USB 3.0, eSATA and firewire 800 interfaces environments.

The Best External Hard Drive Or Not?I bought this external hard drive. Prior to purchasing I went to the WD site and downloaded the pdf manual to familiarize myself. Glad I did because the monkey-see-monkey-do two drawing instructions (sic) were insulting and insufficient. (Yes, the My Passport does have the pdf in its memory for access.) It seemed ‘doable’ but not being a computer wiz … I took a gamble and bought it. Slick looking, nice size; perfect for moving files from PC to PC. I attempted to load the driver on my home PC. I plugged it in, made sure that it registered on My Computer, canceled the ‘auto wizard’ and opened my ‘E’ drive where My Passport resided; all according to instructions. It opened and revealed three options as to what kind of back up (driver) I wished to load.

I chose the one that seemed the simplest but not really knowing what they really were. The pdf manual did not enlighten. It went to the 1 minute mark and then quit. Tried several times. Then I tried it on my PC at work. The driver loaded ok and everything seemed ok. I stopped the copying of data and opened the My Passport HD which seemed a bit confusing. Lots of confusion screens with My Passport but then again I am not a computer whiz. A few of my files were there. OK.

Fine. Then I attempted to delete the files as one is apt to do. They wouldn’t delete. Fortunately I didn’t load anything truly important or I’d be exceedingly miffed. Something is not right with this portable hard drive. (Loading seems to be a crap shoot as to what is copied when.) I’ve heard that there is a 10% failure rate with external drives. Maybe my experience with this HD makes up the 10%. Not sure that I wanted to go through all this again with an exchange and asked for a refund.

Maybe this is naive of me but all I want is a portable hard drive that is plug-n-play like many (but not all!) memory sticks. I want to be able to select the files that I want to copy without playing eenie meenie having to decide what kind of storage I want. In simple words: 1) plug-n-play 2)USB 3) simple password entry and verification 4)memory. That’s it. Nothing more. (Any suggestions please let me know.)

When I purchased the 1 Tb version of this drive I expected It to work with my MacBook Pro that I use for school work. I was going to use it to store all of my movies that I have ripped onto my gaming desktop, for viewing anywhere. It writes to the drive from my windows desktop perfectly, averaging at around 150 mbps, (I have usb 3.0) but When I plug it into a mac computer, and I have tried it on multiple macintosh computers, I can not even write anything. It reads fine, and I can watch my anime to my hearts content, but if I try to load some files for transfer to someone else’s computer it refuses to copy. I am happy with the read and write speeds otherwise, and would recommend this product if you do not own a mac.

I still use this external hard drive, but have to load everything from my desktop.

I Love My Western Digital Products 1TB My Passport.it’s overall very good. good speed, easy to use… Only issue, I cann’t figure out how to use their included software to backup files. excellent product. very easy to use, install software, and no comapability problems. I am running it on win 7 ultimate and am very pleased with the performance…

This portable hard drive does everything you need it to and is very reliable.

Pros:
- Very small/portable for 1TB capacity
- Sleek design
- Quiet and cool
- Subtle indicator light
- USB 3.0 speeds (though I have not tested these since my laptop doesn’t have 3.0)
- Works perfectly fine with USB 2.0

Cons:
- Specific USB 3.0 cable (It can plug into USB 2.0 fine, but the part that plugs into the actual hard drive is different from your standard usb/mini usb cable. However, I’m sure these cables will become more common as USB becomes more prevalent)
- Very short USB cable

I’ve owned and constructed my fair share of external hard drives, and I have to say that I’m impressed with this piece of tech thus far. First of all, 1 TB in such a small form factor is impressive enough. It can fit easily in my back pocket or the front pocket of my backpack, and the case construction seems solid enough to take a few hits. My biggest complaint about HDDs like these is that if you leave the USB cable connected to the device while transporting it around, it’s likely to loosen the connector over time and ruin the USB port on the drive.

That being said, don’t do that and it wont be a problem. I haven’t had this drive long enough to tell if this would happen or not, but the connector seems to be fairly rigidly connected to the case so I’m not worried for now. One thing I do have to note is the short length of the USB 3.0 cable included with the drive. For laptops it’s fine, but if you have a bottom located front side USB port on your computer and want to rest this drive on top of a larger case, you would have to get a longer cord (I was surprised at how expensive this would be). Not enough of an issue to take off any points. Oh yeah, USB 3.0 is great. This thing is quite speedy with a new USB 3.0 sporting mobo. Rock it and love it.

an external hard drive that required no separate power supply, was compact, and had a fairly large capacity (1TB+). This product met all of those requirements. We literally took the drive out of the box, plugged it in (recognized by and compatible with Win7), and approximately 4-6 hours (not sure of exact performance) later had backed up 900+ GB of media (pictures, music, and videos). We are quite pleased with its performance in these respects.

i wanted to use the pre-loaded WD software to automatically back up media files. The problem is that we do not keep media on the C drive — which is the ONLY drive you can have automatically backed up. There is NO way to specify a different drive. So if you are like us and keep files on other drives, you are out of luck…

1 TB Ultra Portable External Hard Drive Smaller Than Actual Passport. This is an elegant looking product, with a large capacity, quick interaction, and effective backup. It met my needs for a large capacity, small footprint hard drive.

The world’s most popular portable hard drive now features more capacity than ever to store all the important memories of your digital life. It also includes automatic, continuous backup and password protection. How smart is that!

Store all your favorite videos, music, photos, and important files with the huge capacity of 1TB. Still sleek and compact, you can load it up and take it with you anywhere. Seeing is believing. Visual backup displays your content in categories and shows the progress of your backup. Relax, your data is secure. Automatic, continuous backup will instantly make a second copy whenever you add or change a file. Retrieve your valuable data to its original location whether you’ve lost all your data or just overwritten an important file.

Extend your PC’s storage capacity with the high performance hard drive today! WD are the best HD and this one is small and easy to take with you wherever you go. I highly reccommend having a back up of all your stuff and 1Tb is enough space for most people to store everything they have.

bought this HDD thinking that WD is the best HD manufacturer, with very high quality standards, after two days of use i went to a friends house and accidentaly drop the hdd to the floor from a distance of 30 cms …… It never worked again, i tried everyhing ! New Format.disks repairs, partitions… And nothing.. All I could safe were 12 gb of the whole 1000 gb. I was really dissappointed with this product. Know ing it was A PORTABLE HDD it is veeery delicate and sensible to damage ! So if you plan to take it for a bus travel or walk.. For get it it is a portable hdd from your pc to your night table. I would advice to buy a pillow or something to place it in a very safe place.

I’ve had this product for over a month now and I’ve been using it almost every night to backup files from my laptop. I was a little nervous because all of the hard drives I looked at seemed to have problems. So far, I haven’t had any problems with it – I plug it in and Time Machine (I have a Mac) takes care of everything for me. I’m satisfied with this product and would recommend it.

The best external hard drive you can find on the market:Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive (Black) (Electronics) .

I have a 500 GIG version of this portable hard drive which is several years old, & I am very pleased with it but all of us in the family was sharing the same drive so I figured that it was about time to get each our own. I was going to go for 2 more 500 GIG ones but the price of the 1TB was just too good to pass up.

Since we are not using the Passport for automatic back-up we didn’t install the software (well we did on one then removed it as it really didn’t fit our needs)and although our USB ports are still 1.0 and though that there may be an issue but there wasn’t and they work fine.

The order came much quicker than I had expected and we are pleased with the transaction, shipping and most of all our new portable hard drives.

It’s my first external hard drive to use. I wanted a portable hard drive to store my personal data on and I have a windows 7 virtual machine in it and I’m able to plug this hard drive to any computer that has a virtual machine software and I have my PC in my pocket wherever I go (home, work, … etc).

Portability was a main factor for me, and this hard drive is very portable it can actually fit in your shirt’s pocket, but I don’t do that actually, I bought a case for it to protect it and it has a space for the USB cable too, so I do recommend getting one if you gonna have it with you on the go often. The only shortcoming I see which is not really vital is that the USB cable is a bit too short, but it’s not that big deal anyway. Other than that tha drive is very stable I move it a lot while using it and having the VM running and nothing ever happened.

I’ve had loads of external hard drives for backups from 5 MB up (yes – MB, not GB). This is the first one that wouldn’t work out of the box. It would start the backup, after about 5 minutes the computer would loose the drive, the backup would fail, then it would reappear.

I sent this 1T Western Digital drive back and went with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100 (Black), which is fine and even supports other interfaces. But that’s another review…

I’m running Windows 7 on a Dell E6400 and have never had a problem with a drive or the USB port.

I suspect that it has a problem with the power on the USB port power. Don’t let them tell you “all externally powered drives over 500 MB have this problem”. I have 640s, 750s, and even the 1TB Seagate and have no problem.

On the plus side, it’s slightly smaller and lighter than the Seagate (but more so than a 640 GB drive). However, what good is carrying a small drive that doesn’t work? You might as well carry a rabbit’s foot and hope for the best.

Big drive need enough power to run properly……if your computer have problem of power then this problem starts……although you can use flash drive very easily that not enough to power to this powerful machine……….

Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB HDD slower compared with same product from other source. The writing speed of this one is considerably slower than the other one I have which is exactly same, though $14 more expensive purchased from other sources.

The writing speed of this one is around 4MB/sec to 5MB/sec, the other one is 19MB/sec to 20MB/sec. This is for my home vista PC.

Watching movies on the drive become discontinuous if I copy a big file to it at the same time.
On the new Linux machine (still usb2.0), they are 20MB/sec and 31MB/sec respectively at the beginning, then this one slow down after a while to 6MB/sec.

After four hours and over 300 GB of data thing took a dump. Won’t let me write anything else to it and will read data sometimes. Will try another one but realy don’t have any confidence in WD. Do not install the software with WD hard drives! But just think of how much data I could have lost if it lasted six hours.

I should research this item more carefully. The only good part is that this small drive hold 1 TB. There is 500 MB wasted that is filled with their bad software. The smartware is slower than normal copy & paste. It drains system resource. You want to get rid of this software due to several issues.

One main issue is that you can’t remove the 500MB of VCD. You can only disable VCD. You can’t use this drive for PS3.

It is not real portable if you need computers with smartware.

Don’t buy any more external WD hard until they fix this issue.

it’s own dual type plug on the drive so no ordinary usb lead will work. You have been warned – don’t loose that bad boy you might end up with a nice little door stop.

The drive is very small (deck of cards-ish) and fast, and given that it’s 1TB, you won’t miss the 20GB of space that is lost right off the bat, such are hard drives. My only issue with this device is that the USB cable that attaches to the drive has a proprietary (non USB) connection at one end. So if you lose it or damage it, you have to order a new one from WD. I would have rather had either a standard USB A-to-B cable, or even an attached cable that retracts into the drive itself, as others offer. That’s my only gripe. I have so far backed up 200 GB with no issues.

HDD too easy to use. I don”t know if the credit of easy to use goes to Apple or Western Digital, but as a user I am happy with the combination I have. I wanted something gigantic and portable to supplement my new MacBook Pro, which has a 121GB solid state drive–very cool and functional, but maybe not sufficient by itself for the next 3 years. The My Passport is a nice visual match for the MacBook, with more capacity than I’ll need. I use it for Time Machine backup, and also have some legacy data–photographs, music, finances &c–just stored as normal files on disk. All the documentation is on the disk itself, so when I first plugged it into my old XP PC, I got the usual misleading message asking if I wanted to give permission to search for a driver on the web. That’s completely unnecessary–it just works, and you don’t have to do anything.

However, I did have to reformat the drive in order to be able to use it on the Mac, since I naively did not realize the file systems are incompatible. It was easy to do. I copied the documentation & drive management software onto all my computers (belt & suspenders), plugged the drive into the Mac’s USB port and reformatted it. Didn’t take very long. Then I copied the docs and drive management software back onto the drive, and installed the software on the Mac. No problems, although in the end I am using Time Machine for backups instead of Western Digital’s software. Then I copied all my legacy data from all my PCs over the wireless network. That took a few hours, and several times the Mac would tell me I didn’t have permission to copy one of my files. Typically this would be a pdf or spreadsheet I got from a fellow committee-member at church. I would just make a copy on the PC, and copy the copy.

I travel all the time & work with several computers, office, home, personal, & in different countries, etc., this product allows me to keep important info in a small package without having to have a laptop etc. with me, it is the one thing I will not leave home without

The instructions on the drive say not to move it when it’s operating, but I made the decision to use it for Time Machine back ups while in a One-to-One session at the Apple Store. The staffer & I started the process, which takes an hour or so the first time. We did other stuff, and the initial back-up was still going on when session time ended. So I left the drive connected, put the MacBook & drive in my bag, and carefully strolled through the mall to drink coffee and wait for it to finish. No problem. I enjoyed the coffee and worked the email, never have had a problem.

Portable External Hard Drive Can’t Boot From Here.I have it since March. Very small, light and the shape is rounded, which means no edges or hurting borders. I use it a lot to store my home videos. I just don’t know how to profit from the sofwares which are included. They seem useless for me. The cable for USB 3 is a lttle bit harder so you have to take care not to drop it. The USB 3 connection looks more easy to break than the regular USB2. You should always work with this HD on any flat surface. But this applies for ANY USB 3 port. The speed is better than the regular one.

Not mac friendly. Wanted to have portable bootable backups for my macs, so I bought this. Bad choice. It is formatted for windows and the mac formating kept failing. I had to go to the 4th level of tech support before anyone had a clue about hard drives. While waiting during one of the support calls, I finally got it to partition, but was then told by level 4 that partitions aren’t supported, and in a case of failure, the encryption (non-removable) would make data recovery impossible. Drag and drop maybe, but not bootable.

Edit- Just got a call from Western Digital customer relations who explained to me that I had been given misinformation and because of my poor tech support experience, they offered to comp me a hard drive that is suitable for my purposes.

Amazing… a terabyte in that small package. It’s fast. It’s huge… and it’s small. For the money, this is the best way to increase storage space for pictures and video for a desktop, and especially a laptop. I am sure it will be obsolete soon, but for now it is a great buy.

I just got my drive today and I was disappointed when it wouldn’t connect to my computer. I have to hold the drive in weird positions to stretch out the cable for it to work. I am not sure if it’s the connection on the hard drive or the cable that came with it.

I spoke to tech support who offered to send me a free cable. However, if something was wrong with the drive, that I would need to pay return shipping to get it fixed, even under the warranty.

I’m not going to take the chance of trying their cable or buying another on my own. I paid $120 for this and I expect it to work 100% of the time.

I got a WD passport and after a year it simply stopped working. It could no longer be seen in Windows Explorer suddenly one day for no reason. If you look this problem up on the web you’ll see that it happens to lots of people with this product. WD customer service said there was nothing I could do about it. They gave me the number for a third party data recovery service that would charge to get the data off the drive. This product is COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE as a source for back up data that you don’t want to lose!!!
