1. The best operating system is Windows XP, or Win 2000(like XP),Win 98 and Win ME have no such partition method. Right click “My Computer” icon on the desktop, select “management.”

2. In the “Computer Management” window, select “Disk Management.”

3. The new disk will be out of a “initialize disk” window, tick the little box in front of the disk to confirm the completion.

4. Then we can see a 37.25G “Disk 1″ (not assigned), which is not partition.

5. Disk partition including the primary partition, extended partition, logical partition. Right click the diagram on the disk which is not assigned to and select “New Partition.”

6. The disk partition wizard will appear, the next step.

7. Our first step should be into “master disk partition.” The next step.

8. The primary partition size can be arbitrarily specified, if you are only prepared to sub-district 40G hard disk to one partition, all the capacity can be designated as the primary disk partition. Here we are ready to split two areas, the first half of the total sub-district is about 19,000. Next.

9. Directly to the next step without modification (in this step someone select the second entry but does not assign a drive letter, the result is disk are divided, but the drive letter can not be seen, they think  that the external hard disk has problem).

10. Formatting, in this step you can choose FAT32 or NTFS, but if you choose the NTFS, WIN98 and WINME is not supported, you will not see external hard disk drive; If you have an area larger than 32G , you can only select NTFS formatted. In order to complete the partition as soon as possible, it is recommended choose “perform a quick format”, otherwise we have to wait a long time. Next step

11. OK to finish.

12. Is being formatted. If your computer USB is USB2.0 and the previous step to choose a quick format, format will be quickly concluded; if your older computer do not support USB2.0 or do not select quick format, you have to wait a long time.

13. After the primary partition formatting is complete, we need to partition the remaining. In the remaining black bar right click “New Partition.”

14. Now we partition extended partition. Next.

15. It’s not need change capacity, because the rest should be retained by the extended partition (no matter how much) in addition to which the primary partition has been divided. The next step until finished (extended partition is not formatted).

16. We could see extended partition become into a green note, now we partition the logical partition. In the extended partition, right click select “New Logical Drive.”

17. There can only choose a logical drive. you need to partition the capacity of extended partitions to several logical partition, then repeat this step to build several logical drives. The next step you could follow the above described.

18. Logical drive is blue color, when opening “My Computer”, you will be able to see the drive letter, then you could use it to copy something.

The above is external hard disk partition we have completed.

Then Partition Magic to change the external hard disk partition functions [without backing up data] will give our a big help, follow my presentation then do it.

First, select the hard disk partitions that need to changed; on the tool bar click on a bi-directional arrow button to start the Resize / Move, move the mouse to the green stripe on the above, you can directly drag, at the same time, you will find values shown below the box will be changed. Note that, in the striped box, the green meaning the remaining space not used, the black meaning it has been used, the gray mean the size of released FreeSpace. In addition, you can also directly fill out the needs of the partition size on the following value box. But the size of released free hard drive partition can not exceed the maximum size of free space, while the newly generated partition NewSize can not be smaller than the size of hard disk capacity has been used.

Setting the location of the new partition: Partition Magic to set the location of the new partition is through the value “FreeSpace Before” and the “FreeSpace After” to be achieved. If the value of “FreeSpace Before” is 0, it indicating a new row in the same geographical area, If you change the D drive, the new partition will between D,E, If the value of “FreeSpace After” is 0,it indicating new partition before the original partition, the new partition between C, D. In general we don’t need to change the default value for the cluster size (Cluster-Size).

Completed the setting, identify it, it does not matter, as long as you’re not pressing the circle button on the main interface, these settings will not be implemented.

Now look at the list of the external hard disk partition, there is a new free space.
