Why real capacity of WD external hard drive are messing? it’s lost 70gb?I’m no computer expert, but every drive is like this. For example, a 32 GB iPod will come with only around 30 GB free and a 120 GB Xbox 360 hard drive will come with about 110 GB free. It’s just how memory is, nothing is wrong with your drive. I’m looking for an external hard drive to back up that is reasonably priced and easily compatible with a Macbook ? Used the drive to back up several computers…including a windows xp and also latest mac…today I went to find a file on the drive with my mac air… it was a music file…found it with no problem burned a cd..but then I noticed that in finder I couldn’t see the WD…so I unplugged and replugged…now the mac is acting like it cannot see the drive at all….utility doesn’t se it either…any ideas how to proceed?

Ok this is how I enabled it to work on my Mac and it also works on my Windows computer:
Well I figured it out for all those of you who need to format this for a MAC.
Open your Disk Utility and find the Drive WD External HDD… Click on it once and you will see options on the right.
Hit the button on top called PARTITION. Where it says VOLUME INFORMATION, change the name to something like ‘backup’ or whatever name you choose, and then where it says FORMAT, hit the drop down menu and choose MS-DOS FAT
Hit APPLY. Let it run thru it’s thing. Then eject the drive. Plug it back in and then drag and drop your files. It works perfectly

Check Western Digital website. About 4 years ago a WD that I had would unmount on occasion from my mac. The WD website detailed a procedure to unplug it / restart / plug it back in for macs to see it and it worked fine. I don’t know why that happened once in awhile. If it does come on again, make sure your data on it is backed up. I would be nervous that it’s a sign of possible failure – as all drives eventually do now.

Is anyone using an external hard drive to keep theit iTunes Library on? I don’t mean backing it up – I mean playing songs and watching videos from the external hard drive. I want to keep my music and videos on a large external drive but am not sure if that will slow down the playing of songs or watching videos on the PC or anywhere on the network.

The Setup
this is not very difficult, but for many who’ren’t conversant in looking outunder iTunes’ hood, I figured I’d lay this out and startfrom square one to make sureeveryyou can play along.
